Humberside in the UK north-east is set for a major new investment in the offshore renewable energy market with a decision by E.On to build a new wind farm there.

Up tot £736 million is to be invested in development of a 73-turbine offshore array which will be developed by E.On UK and sited just 8 kilometres (5 miles) offshore from the coast of East Yorkshire in the UK north-east, just north of the mouth of the river Humber.

Dubbed the Humber Gateway, the new wind farm is set to create 1,000 jobs and will provide up to 219 Megawatts of generating capacity.

Construction of an electricity sub-station to serve the array is due to begin next March and the offshore construction phase will see completion of the project by Spring 2015.

“Increasing the proportion of electricity we generate from low carbon, renewable sources is a vital part of meeting the energy challenges we all face,” declared Dr Tony Croker, chief executive of E.On UK.

And his company's new plan has been backing of the UK Prime Minister. “I welcome E.On's significant investment, which is a vote of confidence in renewable energy and in the UK market,” declared UK Prime Minister David Cameron. “It will create a thousand jobs in the next few years, spearhead development of the UK's fast growing offshore wind supply chain and strengthen links between the UK and Germany in renewables and grid.”

E.On is already a partner in three other UK offshore wind farms, at Blyth, Northumberland, Scroby Sands off Great Yarmouth on the UK east coast, Robin Rigg in the Solway Firth, and the London Array in the Thames Estuary.

Also E.On  is working on environmental studies for a proposed wind farm at Rampion off the Sussex Coast.

Humber Gateway is part of a wider and €7 billion five-year investment programme by E.On across Europe which includes the 288 MW Amrumbank wind farm – the first commercial wind farm to be developed by E.On offshore Germany -  and the 48 MW Kårehamn wind farm off Sweden's coastline, as well as biomass, and solar and power plants.

Both the Humber Gateway and Kårehamn will use new Vestas V112 3.0 Megawatt turbines and Amrumbank will use Siemens' 3.6 MW units.
