Further drilling in Norway's Johan Sverdrup field area has resulted in another new discovery on the Geitungen prospect.

Statoil has reported a new find drilled with the 16/2-12 Geitungen prospect well which has been drilled in the PL265 licence area with the Ocean Vanguard semi-submersible.

The well has encountered a 35 metre (115 feet) oil column and Statoil has already indicated a preliminary reserves estimate of between 140 and 270 million barrels of oil equivalent in basement rocks.

Drilled three kilometres north of the Johan Sverdrup field area, Geitungen was defined as a separate prospect and well data indicates there is probably communication between the two field areas, Statoil has indicated.

Øivind Reinersten, who is heading up the Johan Sverdrup project for Statoil, says the Geitungen find will be taken into consideration while planning the overall field development for the area.

“The discovery should therefore be seen in relation with the on-going appraisal programme in Johan Sverdrup to narrow down the volume range and uncertainty,”  Reinersten added.

Well 16/2-12 is the eighth drilled in PL 265 – operated by Statoil with 40%, and the well reached a vertical depth of 2,045 metres (6,707 ft) subsea, in a water depth of 115 metres (377 ft).

The other partners in the licence are Petoro AS with 30%, Det norske oljeselskap with 20% and Lundin Norway which holds 10%.
