Statoil and partner Eni now have a major field to develop after drilling on the Havis prospect confrme3d a major new oil and gas find.

And with the previous Skrugrad discovery the two companies are now looking at a major field development for the PL532 region to exploit between 400 and 600 million barrels of oil equivalent  recoverable reserves.

Today Statoil confirmed it has made a second Barents Sea discovery on the Havis prospect after drilling with the Aker Barents semi-submersible on the  7220/7-1 well which has encountered

Drilled just 7 kilometres (4.3 miles) south-west of the Skrugard discovery, made in April 2011 – which Statoil recently said it would develop with a floating production facility – the Havis well has encountered 48 metre (157 feet) gas column and a 128 metre (420 ft) oil column.

And Statoil chief Helge Lund says the two discoveries together confirm the existence of a new petroleum system in the far north region of Norway.

Statoil's president and chief executive declared today: “Havis is our second high impact oil discovery in the Barents Sea in nine months. The discovery’s volume and reservoir properties make it Skrugard’s twin. Skrugard and Havis open up a new petroleum province in the North.”

And he added: “The Skrugard and Havis discoveries will be important for industrial development and will further boost activity in the supplier industry, providing new jobs and generating spin-off effects throughout the region,” adds Lund.

Announcing the discovery today, Statoil underlined how much exploration effort it has been putting into the Barents Sea region over the last 30 years, with participation in 88 of the 92 wells drilled in the Barents Sea, which it says has allowed it to build up competence in the region and a “deep understanding” of the hydrocarbon systems there.

Statoil's Erik Strand Tellefsen, is vice president for the Skrugard development  He said Havis will boost development of Skrugard as a new core area on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

The 7220/7-1 wildcat was the second well in PL 532, which was awarded in Norway's 20th Licensing Round in 2009

Aker Barents drilled the well to a vertical depth of 2200 metres (7,216 ft) subsea, in a water depth of 365 metres (1197 ft). Statoil is the operator PL532 with 50%. Eni Norge holds 30% and Petoro  20%.

Statoil indicated at the end of last year that feasibility studies on Skrugard had confirmed it could  be developed with a floating production solution.
