Barryroe well hits hydrocarbons
Preliminary results from drilling on the Irish Barryroe oil prospect in the Celtic Sea have indicated hydrocarbon shows.
After weather and rig-related drilling delays, operator Providence Resources has said that one section of the well recommenced drilling on 2 February and has since encountered hydrocarbon shows during drilling down to the current depth of 6,969 feet (2,124 metres) total vertical depth subsea.
All key geological horizons have been encountered in line with pre-drill prognosis, Providence said today, and hydrocarbons were encountered during drilling a 12-1/2-inch section of the well.
“Subsequent operations will include coring of the underlying primary reservoir zone, which is the main focus of this drilling programme,” the exploration company has indicated. “Following this, it is planned to carry out drill stem testing of the primary basal sands target in order to ascertain flow rates and productivity.”
The 48/24-10z well is being drilled in a water depth of 100 metres (3,28 feet) 50 kilometres (31 miles) offshore in Standard Exploration Licence 1/11 where Providence is the operator with 80% partnered by Lansdowne Oil and Gas which holds the remaining 20%.
