Lundin Petroleum reports drilling has commenced on the giant Johan Sverdrup discovery offshore Norway.

Lundin says the 16/2-13 well is targeting the north-eastern part of the field, and it is located 2.5 kilometres (1.56 miles) from the original 16/2-6 discovery well drilled in 2010 which proved up Norway's third largest discovery in 20 years.

“The main objective is to determine the top reservoir, reservoir quality and thickness, and oil water contact in this of part of the field,” Lundin said, as the drilling programme commenced with the Transocean Arctic semi-submersible, aiming for a depth of 2,150 metres.

Drilling is expected to take up to 45 days to complete, in licence PL501, which Lundin operates with 40%, partnered by Statoil and and Maersk Oil Norway.
