Gazprom has confirmed to Offshore.no/International that it is in talks to find new partners for the giant Barents Sea Shtokman development.

After reports that the project had come to a standstill, we asked the Russian gas giant exactly what it next steps were to try and develop the 3.8 trillion cubic metre offshore gas field, following the expiry of a partnership agreement with Total and Statoil in June.

Today Gazprom's communications department replied, and said: “Currently Gazprom [is] in talks with foreign partners to [find] a new business model for the implementation of the Shtokman project.”

But Gazprom's communications team avoided some of the other inquiries we made about current work undderway on the development; on forward plans for the project and the currently estimated cost of either a LNG or pipeline based development for the gas field. Nor did Gazprom give any indication of when the field might now come onstream.

At the end of last month a spokesman for Shtokman Development AG – the joint company formed by Gazprom, Total and Statoil to develop the field – told Offshore.no/International that it was still working normally towards development of the field.
