Oil and Gas UK has pledged to conduct its own review of offshore helicopter safety in the wake of the report into a crash which killed 16 people in 2009.

After the UK's Air Accident Investigation Branch published its final report in the 1 April 2009 crash involving flight 85N between Peterhead and the BP Miller platform, Oil and Gas UK says the report's 17 safety recommendations will be examined through its own Helicopter Safety Steering Group.

“While the AAIB report confirms that neither the actions of the crew nor the weather were factors in the accident and that the helicopter maintenance regime satisfactorily complied with existing regulations, it does make 17 recommendations,” the UK industry group observes.

And it goes on: “A number of these were highlighted in the AAIB’s interim reports and have already been addressed and applied by the helicopter operators in the two years since the accident. The new recommendations focus on additional monitoring of technical components and the Helicopter Safety Steering Group will conduct its own detailed review of these recommendations and will focus on monitoring their implementation.”

Robert Paterson, health and safety director for Oil and Gas UK pointed out that the Helicopter Task Group was set up after two major safety incidents in 2009 – in the first in February that year all the personnel on board another ditched helicopter survived after what was described at the time as a “textbook” rescue.

The work of that task group is now being taken forward by the Step Change in Safety Helicopter Safety Steering Group.
