Renewable energy firm MeyGen has appointed Kongsberg Maritime to deliver a noise data survey for its proposed offshore renewable power plant which is to be installed in the Pentland Firth between the Scottish mainland and the Island of Stroma.

Kongsberg is to provide baseline and operational noise measurements for prototype devices already undergoing testing at the European Marine Energy Centre in the Orkney Islands, to help select how and where devices are deployed in the sea for the 400 MW MeyGen project which is due to be operational by 2020.

Monitoring the noise output from the devices on test at EMEC will also allow engineers to minimise the impact on marine life.

MeyGen is aiming to develop a tidal turbine site at in the Inner Sound area of the Pentland Firth, in shallow water between 20 and 40 metres (65.6 – 131 feet).

During the last year MeyGen has commenced Front End Engineering and Design for a 20MW phase 1a array and work is underway to upgrade a local onshore transmission station which is due to be commissioned in July this year to serve the project.

Two devices, an Atlantis Resources Corporation AK 1000 turbine, and a Tidal Generation Limited 1 MW turbine, are on test at EMEC, prior to possible deployment on MeyGen's project.
