Government officials have agreed to take over control of a special UK test site used to trial renewable energy devices.

The UK's Department for Business Innovation and Skills has agreed to take over running of the Wave Hub site in Cornwall from the South West Regional Development Agency from 1 January next year.

The move comes after the government confirmed last summer that it was closing down regional development agencies, putting a question mark over the running of the Wave Hub site near Hayle on Cornwall's north-west coastline.

A new stand-alone company, called Wave Hub Limited, is to be established to run the test site in future, the BIS declared today.

“As part of the transition to a green economy the government is committed to developing clean energy sources including marine,” business minister Mark Prisk has stated, adding: “Development of the Wave Hub in Cornwall will bring both environmental and economic benefits to the UK and I am pleased that we are able to take this positive step.”

Also the Department for Business has confirmed the Claire Gibson as permanent general manager for the site, after taking on the role in an interim capacity since May. “This is good news for Wave Hub, for Cornwall and the South West and for the future of wave energy development across the UK,” Gibson declared.

“It secures Wave Hub’s status as a publicly-owned asset, ensures it will continue to be locally run, and reinforces the pivotal role of Wave Hub and Cornwall to the development of a commercial marine energy industry in the UK.
