Nimrod strikes up

Drilling has commenced on the deepwater Nimrod prospect offshore Namibia operating with Ocean Rig's Poseidon drillship.

Operated by Petrobras, the Nimrod prospect well, designated Kabeljou 2714/6-1 is being drilled in 360 metres of water (1,108 feet) in the Orange Basin in block 2714A located 77 kilometres (48 miles) offshore Namibia, aiming for a total drilling depth of 3,350 metres (11,000 feet).

Drilling is expected to take up to 45 days, according to Chariot Oil and Gas, which has a 25% stake in the licence block. Petrobras, holds 30% and BP another 45%.

Nimrod, the second four to five wells planned by Chariot this year, has been previously described by the company as one of the biggest prospects to be drilled anywhere in the world this year.

“Nimrod is the biggest prospect in our inventory and any success would be transformational for both Chariot and Namibia. We look forward to being able to update the market with the well results in due course,” stated company chief executive Paul Welch.
