Flow test results from  the Rovuma Basin Ntorya-1 well in southern Tanzania have demonstrated big gas flows.

Drilling partner Solo oil says the Ntorya 1 well, drilled on the onshore sector of the Rovuma Basin has flowed at up to 20 Mmcf/d of gas - equivalent to 3,350 b/d of oil – with an additional 140 b/d of condensate.

An upper 3.5 metres (11.5 feet) of a 25 metres (80 ft) reservoir sand interval was perforated and tested in the well using several different choke sizes over the last four days, with shut-in periods to allow for pressure build-up within the reservoir.

“The successful testing will now be followed by a programme of seismic acquisition later in the year in order to gain a fuller understanding of the size of this discovery and to identify further drilling targets,” London-listed Solo Oil, which has a 25% equity stake in the Aminex-operated Ntorya-1 well reported today.

Solo's executive director Neil Ritson said the flow rates and the presence of condensate enhances the economics of the discovery, “...and provides further encouragement that oil may be discovered in the onshore basin,” he suggested.

And after a decision by the Tanzanian government to finance construction pof a 36-inch diameter gas pipeline from Mtwara, 25 km (15.6 miles) from the Ntorya-1 discovery, to the capital Dar es Salaam, backs up the viability of a development project, Ritson suggested. “The imminent construction of additional gas infrastructure will further add to the value of this discovery and the onshore Ruvuma as a whole,” he added.
