A specially-built subsea trenching vehicle featuring components from various European companies is to be deployed by a Danish firm to work on a UK offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

Blistering with high technology the bespoke tracked trenching vehicle is to be launched from the dynamically positioned vessel MV Nico to operate on a UK offshore wind farm.

The machine features a power and control system which took six weeks to develop by Aberdeen-based ROV specialist Sub-Atlantic and was designed by Denmark's CT Offshore with GEO Marine to cope with fast-moving murky coastal water.

Aberdeen-based Sub Atlantic supplied a surface transformer which powers a propulsion system based on a  Comanche ROV which in turn comprises four horizontal and three vertical thrusters. A control system also supplied by the company provides both control as well as diagnostics software, and the machine also has a survey pod, to control and diagnose any problems with survey sensors.

Additionally, the machine features hydraulic power units, motors and movement compensators.

Paw Cortes, chief executive of CT Offshore paid tribute to the speed with which Sub-Atlantic responded to design and build the necessary systems for the trenching machine. “We chose Sub-Atlantic Ltd ….because of their vast experience in finding creative solutions to sustained operations in unusual and extreme environments,” he said.
